We are very proud of the service and care we provide to our clients at Beechboro Physiotherapy. But the work we do with you in the clinic isn’t the only way we help you achieve your outcomes. The period between Physiotherapy sessions is crucial in maintaining the benefits you’ve achieved and progressing even further.
Providing a home exercise program (HEP) to patients is one of the most fundamental and important aspects of physiotherapy. Research has shown that patients who adhere to their prescribed exercises are significantly better at achieving their goals and demonstrate a greater increase in physical function. Unfortunately, it has also been shown that, in general, patients adhere poorly to their prescribed home program, with varying estimations from research. Non-adherence to a home exercise program has been shown to be as high as 50-65% for general musculoskeletal conditions. In the low back pain patient population, non-adherence to home exercise has been shown to be as high as 50-70%. Continuing with a prescribed exercise regime is also important to decrease the risk of recurrent injury or flare-ups. Patients who do not comply with their prescribed exercises have shown to demonstrate less positive outcomes long term. From our perspective, non-adherence can also result in us believing that the current treatment is not effective, causing us to unnecessarily modify the program.
We also stock various items to help make home exercise more effective and create better outcomes for you.
This includes spiky balls, foam rollers, massage sticks and pillows – because exercise is important, but a good night’s sleep is awesome. Feel free to come in and have a look at the various home treatment options we have. Or ask our marvellous Receptionists or Physio’s for more info.
Home exercises may feel uncomfortable, especially if the exercises are new. However, it’s important to know your Physio is very mindful of what the best exercises are for you to complete and what level is best for you. That said, it is important to note that the exercises should not be painful. If you ever have questions about the home exercise program, please don’t hesitate to talk to your Physio. They will tailor the exercises around your individual needs or concerns to ensure success.
